Are you a licensed immigration adviser?

Yes. I am a licensed immigration adviser, licence number 202401049, and I work under the supervision of Andy O'Dell, a full licence holder (licence 201700420). In New Zealand, anyone who gives immigration advice must be licensed by the Immigration Advisers Authority (IAA) or be exempt, such as a practising lawyer. Immigration New Zealand will not accept an application prepared by an unlicensed adviser.

What does "provisional licence" mean for me?

A provisional licence is the first stage of an adviser's career. It means my work is overseen by an experienced full licence holder who reviews my advice and applications. For you, that means two sets of eyes on your file rather than one. I am bound by the same Code of Conduct and the same professional standards as any other licensed adviser.

How can I check your licence?

Search the public Register of Licensed Immigration Advisers on the IAA website. Enter my name or licence number and you will see my licence type, status and expiry date. I encourage every client to do this before engaging any adviser

What is the difference between a licensed immigration adviser and an immigration lawyer?

Accepted Answer

Both can lawfully give immigration advice in New Zealand. Lawyers are regulated by the New Zealand Law Society; licensed advisers are regulated by the IAA and must hold a recognised immigration qualification. I hold a Bachelor of Laws and the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice, and I work only in immigration. If your matter involves court proceedings or wider legal issues, I will tell you and can refer you to a lawyer.

Where are you based, and can you help me if I am overseas or in another part of New Zealand?

I am based in Kaikōura, but most of my work is done online. I meet clients by Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp and lodge applications through Immigration New Zealand's online systems, so it makes no difference whether you are in Auckland, Invercargill or overseas. In-person meetings are available in Kaikōura by arrangement.
