Coming to New Zealand for a while
Visiting family, seeing the country, spending a season here, or coming to look around before a bigger move. A visitor visa covers all of these, and for many people it's a quick, straightforward application. For others, particularly those visiting from countries without a visa waiver, or with family already here, it's where an unexpected decline can derail plans. We help you get it right the first time, and plan what comes after if visiting is only the start.
Do you need a visitor visa, or something simpler?
You're from a visa waiver country. Many visitors, including those from Australia's neighbours in the Pacific, the UK, most of Europe, the US, Canada and a number of Asian countries, don't apply for a visa at all. You request an NZeTA (an electronic travel authority) before you fly and can usually stay for a limited period. It's quick and you can do it yourself. Where it gets complicated is if you want to stay longer, have a criminal conviction, or have been declined a visa before.
You want to stay longer, or come back and forth. Some visitor visas allow multiple entries over a longer period. Parents and grandparents of New Zealand citizens and residents have their own visa that lets them visit for extended periods over several years, with their own set of conditions.
​You're from anywhere else. You'll need a visitor visa before travelling. INZ wants to be satisfied that you're a genuine visitor: that you have a reason to come, the money to support yourself, and a reason to go home afterwards. Most declines happen on that last point, not on paperwork.
You're visiting your partner. If your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident and you're not yet ready for a partnership work visa or residence, a visitor visa based on the relationship can let you spend time together here while you build the evidence for the next step.

Respond when INZ pushes back. If INZ raises concerns or asks for more, we answer. If a visa has been declined, we'll tell you plainly whether it's worth trying again and what would need to change.
